Snake Resources

🐍 Why snakes matter: Snakes help keep nature in balance by controlling rodent populations that can spread disease and damage crops, gardens, and even homes. They also help manage pests like insects and small animals, which keeps our local ecosystem healthier and more stable. Plus, many larger animals — including hawks and owls — rely on snakes as part of their natural diet.

Simply put: having snakes around is one of nature’s best (and free!) pest control systems. Click here for more info ---> Tennessee Snakes

Wild Snake Tips and Guidance

✅ Most snakes in our area are harmless and play a vital role controlling rodents and insects. Visit--> Tennessee snakes identification and information

✅ Snakes don’t chase people — they may seem to “follow” you only because they’re trying to escape in the same direction, or feel cornered and defensive.

❌ Never kill a snake — it’s both unnecessary and, in many cases, illegal to harm native wildlife.

  • If you find a snake: Observe calmly from a safe distance.

  • If it’s outdoors and not trapped, leave it be — it will usually move along on its own.

  • If it’s inside a building or in a dangerous spot (like a porch or playground): Call a local wildlife control or relocation service to safely move it. You can gently encourage it to move using a broom, only if you’re confident it’s non‑venomous and you keep a safe distance.

⚠️ Don’t handle snakes unless you’re trained to do so — even non‑venomous bites can become infected.

🐍 Venomous snakes (like copperheads or timber rattlesnakes) are shy and avoid people; bites are very rare and almost always defensive.

📞 If you find an injured snake, call a reptile rehabber or licensed wildlife rehabber.

🧡 Remember: snakes are part of our natural community and help keep it in balance!

⚠️ Important Note: We’re not medical professionals, and this information is for general guidance only. Always seek immediate medical care from trained professionals if bitten by any snake.

If you’re bitten by a snake:

✅ Stay calm and call 911 right away. Quick medical attention is critical.
✅ Keep the bite area still and at or just below heart level to help slow the spread of venom.
✅ Remove tight items (rings, bracelets, watch, etc.) near the bite before swelling starts.
✅ Remember the snake’s color and markings if it’s safe to do so — don’t try to catch it.

❌ Don’t:
✘ Try to suck out the venom
✘ Cut the wound
✘ Use ice or submerge in water
✘ Apply a tourniquet
✘ Drink alcohol or caffeine

Most snake bites aren’t fatal — but staying calm and getting medical help fast is what saves lives.
