Spay Neuter Programs

This page focuses on spay & neuter options for Pets — dogs and cats who live with families.
If you’re looking for help with Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs for community or feral cats, please see our separate TNR Programs page. (currently under construction)

Why spay & neuter matters
Every year in the U.S., an estimated 6.3 million companion animals enter shelters, and about 920,000 of them are euthanized (ASPCA).
Spaying or neutering helps:

  • Prevent unwanted litters

  • Reduce overcrowding in shelters

  • Improve your pet’s health (e.g., lower cancer risk)

  • Reduce roaming, marking, and some aggressive behaviors

By choosing to spay or neuter, you directly help reduce pet homelessness in our community.

Talk to your local vet

Many veterinary clinics in Unicoi County, Erwin, Johnson City, and surrounding areas offer spay/neuter services. Check with your regular vet, or visit our Local Vets page to see who might provide this service near you.

📝 Tips Before You Go

  • Confirm eligibility and pricing in advance, do not just show up.

  • Validate process and requirements; for example, is a specific type of carrier required, does your pet need to skip evening meal/breakfast/water before appointment, etc. Don't assume!

  • Bring proof of residency, pet ID, and voucher (if used).

  • Ask about transport help or mobile clinic dates—some clinics like ETSN provide this for a small fee.

World Spay Day is an annual event that promotes spaying and neutering to help control pet overpopulation and reduce euthanasia rates in shelters.
