Animal Adoptions
Looking to Adopt a Domestic Pet?
Visit Petfinder to see all types of pet animals currently seeking homes through shelters and partner rescues: Petfinder.com.
Unicoi County Animal Shelter is closed at this time; however, they do have Fosters who have cats and dogs on Petfinder so please adopt local if you can!
Adoption saves lives and helps our overcrowded shelter and rescues care for even more animals in need.
PetSmart in Johnson City also hosts Cats for adoption! View their site for available kitties: PetSmart Cat Adoptions
Also visit our Shelters & Rescues page for direct links to local organizations with adoptable pets!
Our News & Events page also posts upcoming Adoption Events.
Thank you for caring about animals in our community!
Need to Rehome a Pet?
Life changes sometimes make
rehoming necessary — but please
do it safely and responsibly:
✅ Ask family, friends, and trusted neighbors first.
✅ Be honest about your pet’s health, age, and behavior.
✅ Charge a small rehoming fee. It discourages people who collect free animals for harmful purposes.
✅ Never “give away” pets on public classifieds or social media “free” posts without screening.
✅ Check references (ask for Vet references!) and, if possible, visit the new home before finalizing.

Step-by-Step: How to Rehome Responsibly
-
Take clear, natural photos that show your pet’s true personality.
-
Write a truthful, friendly bio (see example template)
-
Share your post only with trusted networks first; then use local rescues, vet offices, or breed-specific groups if needed.
-
Ask questions of potential adopters about their experience, home environment, and why they want to adopt.
-
Check references, and when possible, visit the new home or ask for photos/videos.
-
Complete a simple rehoming contract to transfer responsibility formally.
